The Town of Carrabassett Valley Select Board voted on May 23 to allow the use of Class 1 e-bikes on town-owned land on the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center side of Route 27 (south side).  This permission has been granted on a trial basis from June 15 through November 1, 2022, after which the experience will be reviewed and policy adjusted as needed.  Class 1 e-bikes are also allowed on mountain bike trails located on Sugarloaf property on the south side of Route 27.  E-bikes are NOT currently allowed on the Narrow Gauge or any of the CVTrails network on the north side of Route 27 (Narrow Gauge / Campbell Field side).  Agreements and easements that allow mountain biking and other trail use on the north side of Route 27 are in many cases specifically limited to non-motorized use.  The State of Maine’s clarification of e-bike definitions notwithstanding, these agreements need to be reviewed and potentially adjusted before e-bikes can be allowed on CVTrails on the north side of Route 27.  In the meantime, PLEASE respect this limitation.  If you are riding a Class 1 e-bike, keep to trails on the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center side of route 27.  There is signage in place at key network access points where e-bike use is not allowed.  Note that Class 1 e-bikes are pedal assist up to 20 mph and that Class 2 and 3 e-bikes are not allowed on the CVTrails network.
